چکیده

We report a fast and simple high-speed liquid-chromatographic assay for serum retinol. Only 100 mul of serum is required. The lower detection limit is 50 mug/liter; linearity was demonstrated up to 1.50 mg/liter. On analyzing a serum pool eight times, a CV of 2.5% was obtained. Values by this method are compared with results obtained by a flurometric method [Clin. Chem. 16, 766(1970)].

Simultaneous determination of retinol and α-tocopherol by high pressure liquid chromatography in micro-volumes of serum.

The lack of biochemical data to indicate the prevalence of marginal vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in the country is largely because of the difficulty of obtaining enough serum for analysis, especially from malnourished children. Efforts were therefore made to establish a high-pressure liquid chromatography system (HPLC) for the determination of retinol in micro-volumes of serum. Since our previous...

Simultaneous determination of retinol and retinyl esters in serum or plasma by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography.

We propose a single-run liquid-chromatographic determination, with ultraviolet detection at 330 nm, for serum retinol and retinyl esters. The vitamin A derivatives are extracted according to the Bligh-Dyer procedure. With 200 microliter or serum, the lower detection limit is 50 microgram/liter for retinol and about 100 microgram/liter for retinyl esters. Within-run precision (CV) was 2.3% for r...

Proxy markers of serum retinol concentration, used alone and in combination, to assess population vitamin A status in Kenyan children: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND Serum retinol concentration determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is recommended by the World Health Organization to assess population vitamin A status. This assay is expensive, technically demanding and rarely available in developing countries. Our objective was a) to assess the diagnostic performance of proxy markers in detecting vitamin A deficiency and b) to...

Lipid-soluble antioxidants status and some of its socio-economic determinants among pregnant Ethiopians at the third trimester.

OBJECTIVE To determine the serum levels of three lipid-soluble antioxidants (retinol, beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol) in pregnant women attending an antenatal clinic (ANC) in Gondar, Ethiopia. DESIGN A cross-sectional study involving laboratory determination of serum levels of retinol, alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene using high-performance liquid chromatography and questionnaire-based ...

Vitamin A nutritional status in high- and low-income postpartum women and its effect on colostrum and the requirements of the term newborn.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the vitamin A status in serum and colostrum of postpartum women with different socioeconomic status, comparing the colostrum retinol supply with the vitamin A requirement of the newborn. METHODS Cross-sectional study conducted with 424 postpartum women. Vitamin A maternal dietary intake was estimated using a food frequency questionnaire. Colostrum and serum retinol level...
